James woke up on tuesday morning nervous. He couldn't help it as this was the first time he was set a task with serious consequences if he messed it up. While with an exam you could fail and the worst thing to happen would be to get the lowest grade, now he was playing with much more, maybe even his life. He couldnt get this task wrong, as it wasn't particularly difficult, it was just the fact that he was being trusted with a number of people to get this right, and his reputation depended on it greatly.
After getting himself ready and sorting himself out, James headed down to breakfast, but wasn't really hungry. Normally he tended to eat quite a lot for breakfast as the options were endless here, but this morning he felt worse than he had done before his OWL exams, and it was funny to think that before those he said to himself that he couldn't possibly become more nervous than that. Oh how wrong he had been.
The first couple of lessons went by extremely slowly, so slowly that time seemed to be going backwards, just to make James even more nervous. Luckily James wasn't the type of person to ever show any emotion, so most people barely noticed a change in behaviour since the previous day. However, his supporters and his twin sister could definately see past that, but he had barely spoken to anyone this morning. All he had really said had been that the plan was still on, and it was to take place in the lesson before lunch, as the girl in question didn't have a lesson and would most certainly be in the slytherin common room.
James had changed considerably over the past couple of months. He had left school the old James, and returned a new one, one who had secretly betrayed his family, especially his father. Nobody except for three other Slytherins and possibly his sister (he wasn't aware how much she knew) knew what he had done all summer. During the holidays, James had become much more distant with everyone. His close family had noticed and drilled him for answers as to why he spent hours in his room every day and why, when he wasn’t in his room or at meal times, did he leave the house and not want to be accompanied? Adrienne was probably the most confused of them all, especially when he wouldn't even tell his baby sister. Well, there was an answer to it, but his family wouldn’t be finding that one out. All he told them was that he really wanted to do well in his NEWTs, as this was now his final year, and he always left the house when he wanted to get a breath of fresh air from all of the work and reading he was doing. A couple of times James had successfully managed to answer these questions when his aunt Hermione had been around, and she had stupidly backed him up 100% and was proud that he was using up so much of his holiday time to work. His parents, however, didn’t agree, but on work-related matters, when did his parents ever agree with Hermione?
The truth was, over the summer, James had become a Death Eater. He was sick of trying to pretend to himself that he was someone else, and accepted that his love for the Dark Arts was greater than his respect for his father. He could just picture his dad now, losing his temper, getting angry and upset, but he didn’t need to know as yet. Sometimes he wondered how he felt towards his father - surely he must hate him because he'd joined the death eaters, and how would he have been able to do such deeds and join had he loved his father, the man who spent years trying to defeat the Dark Lord? But James didn't hate him. Maybe he loved him deep down but he didn't really feel it. In fact, he was somewhat void of emotion, unaware of how he felt. But he must have felt stronger towards his siblings, due to the fact that he was prepared to do anything possible for their protection. His father, however, didn't need protection - he was big and strong enough to protect himself, and also, James was of age now and therefore capable of making his own choices.
The lesson before lunch finally arrived, and James shook hands and muttered goodbyes to the three people aware of his departure: Raiden Nott, Harton Zabini and Olivia Wood. While they went to their next lessons, James headed back up to the Slytherin common room. When he entered it, he put his books down on his bed, picked up a couple of small things he would need, placed them in his pocket, then headed down to the common room, which was still empty because the previous lesson had only just ended and James had only come from Potions. To calm himself down, he sat down on one of the black leather sofas by the fire, his eyes on the portrait hole. There was no need for him to go to a lesson, as he wouldn't be attending any more for a while. In fact, he didn't quite know when he would be returning, if ever he did return at all. All he cared about now was that his task needed to be successful, and in order for that to be the case, Sharpay Pucey would need to be around for this lesson. Little did she know it, that she was the victim this time, and her trust in James would be her weakness.
